A friendly and inclusive club aimed at promoting a variety of cycling activities for the whole family!
At Whitchurch Cycling Club we pride ourselves on being family friendly and open to all ages and abilities.
For the Younger Riders (Under 16’s)
Our young rider coached sessions are held every Saturday morning throughout the year and are focused on improving bike handling skills through fun games and activities.
All our coaches are British Cycling trained, fully DRB checked and trained in Emergency First Aid and Safeguarding Children.
Sessions are open to riders as young as 3 years old, as long as they can start, stop and pedal a bike unaided.
Sessions are free of charge to club members. Non members are offered a free trial session and then asked to join.
We meet at Coryton Primary School or near to the old changing room block at the North end of Hailey Park, at the following times:
9am – 10am for 3 – 7 year olds
10:30am – 12 midday for 8 – 16 year olds
We also occasionally use alternative locations such as Fforest Fawr, meeting at the Sculpture Trail car park, to enable our riders to experience a more challenging terrain and the opportunity for a short ride around the trails.
If you would like to come and join one of our sessions please contact the club providing the age of your child and an e-mail address to which we can send you the invite to book. You will then be informed of our next date for new intakes.
For those who wish to make their cycling more competitive, we work towards skills required for Cyclocross, Cross Country Mountain Biking, Grass Track, Track and closed road circuit racing and attend many exciting events throughout the year. Additional blocks of discipline specific training sessions are offered on Wednesday evenings during the winter months for those training to race. These are held at Tongwynlais Primary School in their Dutch Barn and there is a small fee for these sessions due to facility hire.
For the Adults
Our regular Club Rides have taken off well since they started last summer with both social and training rides heading out during weekends and all include a delicious coffee stop.
During the Winter rides continue to go out at weekends and on Wednesday afternoons.
Regular Hill Repeats of Rhiwbina Hill occur every Monday evening all year round – meet at the Deri Inn at 6:30pm, riding by 6:45 for approximately one hour.
We also run indoor Turbo Training sessions on Tuesday evenings 7-8pm with a number of club turbo trainers available to hire at £2 per session or bring your own equipment and the session is free (club membership required after a free taster session).
All details about the club rides and sessions can be found on our Facebook page.
Please also see the ‘For the Family’ and ‘Dirtbags MTB’ section below for details of other sessions that are also open to our younger riders (usually aged 8+) and adult members alike.
Enter various Sportives as part of a team, support each other in your training and join our group on Strava.
Members are encouraged to share their planned ride details if they would like other members to join them.
Coached sessions at Newport Velodrome are available on an ad-hoc basis to adult members of the club. The first of these sessions proved extremely popular and was lots of fun. Track and bike hire is required so this activity is at an extra cost.
Skills coaching for adults is also available but currently not running as a regular session. We would be happy to put on specific adults coaching sessions as demand and coach availability dictates.
For the whole family
During the Summer months we run training sessions on a Wednesday evening. These are open to all members of the family aged 8 and over and we meet up in Fforest Fawr where we practice skills and build fitness. Adult riders and more advance younger riders may go for a ride rather than participate in coached activity.
In the Autumn (September onwards) these sessions then switch focus on Cyclocross skills meeting at a variety of locations. Please contact the club for further details.
We hold training sessions at Maindy Track on a monthly basis during the Summer months. These are coached sessions open to Adults and Children and prove to be very popular and lots of fun. There is a small additional cost to these sessions to cover the hire of the track.
We encourage you to join us on one of our Family Social Rides which are mostly traffic free routes with a variety of meeting points along the way to account for all cycling abilities. We usually end up somewhere nice for lunch and with a play area so we can all socialise.
Cycle races have proven to be very popular family events within the club. There are categories for all ages from 3 to 100! Our families like to make a day of it or even camp overnight. So whether you want to race yourself or just support your team members come and join in the fun!
For the Mountain Bikers – Dirtbags offer informal riding for adults and more experienced younger riders in an off road environment such as natural trails, trail centres and skills parks.
Although very much a part of Whitchurch Cycling Club, Dirtbags have their own identity with their own Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.
Ride locations vary around the forestry woodlands and cycle parks of South Wales. We have weekend and school holiday rides open to all and monthly Friday adult only rides.
We have a set of skills obstacles with which our volunteers are available to run fun sessions at school and community events as required. Please contact the club for details and availability.
Our young riders have taken part in National Cycling events including Street-Velo racing at the British Cycling HSBC City Ride and team pursuit racing on the finish line of the Tour of Britain, along with a Tour of the Team Sky bus. Some of our young members have also had the opportunity to race at the Newport Velodrome and also to present prizes at the Junior Track Championships.
During the Summer of 2018 our young riders were lucky enough to ride with Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas and also with the Team Sky Tour of Britain Team, including Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome!
It’s not all Bike, Bike, Bike!!
The Club also has a very social element to it and we are lucky enough to have use of the Whitchurch Rugby Sports and Social Club as part of our membership. The venue is available to members to hire at discounted rates or even free for some rooms.
We go for post ride drinks or lunch as a group and also hold various fundraising activities throughout the year including an extremely popular twice yearly Family Skittles Tournament.
Please see the ‘Join’ page for details on Membership and how to join our club.
